Monday - March 16, 1998
The SERA-IEG-9 intervened at the Madren Conference Center on
the Clemson University campus at 8:30 AM. The group was
welcomed by Dr. Bill Wehrenberg the Dean of the College of
Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences and Dr. Dan Smith the Director of the Cooperative
Extension Service. Dr. Rocky English and Jack Whetstone were recognized as hosts of
the meeting. Dr. David Teem encouraged the group to continue its work and expressed
the feeling that the group was one of the better information exchange groups in the
Southern region and recognized as such by the Directors. He stated that SERA-IEG9 is
scheduled to terminate September 30, 1998 and that he had submitted the request for a
5-year extension.
Aquaculture in South Carolina was highlighted in the morning session. The
presentations included current status of the industry, as well as, research and extension
efforts to assist the industry through Clemson University and the SC Department of Natural
Resources (Wadell Mariculture Center).
A presentation of the developing National Catfish Information Database (NCID) was given by
Dr. Marty Brunson of Mississippi State University. After this presentation, the
participants decided that an information/exchange group for the NCID should be added to
the SERA-IEG-9.
Research and Extension Summaries were passed out. The majority of Universities and
Federal Labs attending provided each participant with summaries of current research and
extension projects related to aquaculture at their institutions. These summaries
contained titles, abstracts, and the contact person(s) for each project. These
written summaries were initiated in 1994 and proven to be very popular with the SERA-IEG-9
participants.
