SESSION SUMMARY:

 

Max Mayeaux - USDA CSREES

· There is a special USDA grant project looking at post-harvest treatment of oysters in Florida.  The work is being supervised by Otwell at UF (Gainsville).
Gary Burtle – UG
· FDA is currently training personnel to use seafood smell in evaluating seafood.

Jimmy Avery – MSU

· The government is currently revising HACCP standards.
James Steeby – MSU
· Catfish processors have the possibility to acquire a Grade A level testing by USDA.  However, to date there has been little interest by catfish industry.

SESSION SUMMARY:


The QA/Food Safety Information Exchange Group discussed a report from the SRAC Residues Project regarding findings from research conducted to meet Objective #5 of the project. Findings appear very favorable with respect to residues in fish, and the group discussed the potential sensitivity of the data. 

A report from the SRAC Microbial Food Safety Project were also presented and briefly discussed. The Microbial Project has been merged with the ES-USDA Food Safety and Quality Project on HACCP for Processors. 

Additional discussion included both processor- and producer-based QA programs, and the need to continue QA educational efforts. 

The IEG concluded that consumer-oriented educational material and efforts should be augmented, primarily through our more strategic and timely use of information and resources that already exist and are at our disposal. The group endorsed a proposal (which has already been submitted to the WAS program committee) to develop a special session on QA/Food Safety at the 1995 World Aquaculture meeting in San Diego.
