Mississippi State University is holding the fall 2017 commencement ceremony on its Starkville campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Processional begins at 6:30 p.m., with the formal ceremony starting at 7 p.m. Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and dean of UM’s School of Medicine, will deliver the keynote address. A Carroll County native and 1985 MSU microbiology graduate, she previously was UMMC’s associate vice chancellor. Nearly 2,900 Mississippi State students are candidates for 2017 spring semester degrees. William M. Cobb of Dallas, Texas, will receive an honorary doctorate of science during the Friday evening ceremony featuring students from MSU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and its School of Human Sciences, and the Bagley College of Engineering, along with the colleges of Education, Forest Resources and Veterinary Medicine. Family members and others planning to attend MSU graduations should be aware that Humphrey Coliseum admission requires a pass through metal detectors. Since bags and purses also may be searched by security personnel, attendees are encouraged to utilize “clear” bags like those required for football games at Davis Wade Stadium.
