This message has been posted to the Business and Computer Technology Teachers Discussion List.
1. What if there were a simple way to provide student with the books, technology and supplies they need to learn. DonorsChoose makes this possible. People from all walk of life can connect directly with public schools, learn about specific classroom needs and choose how to help. At DonorsChoose.org teachers submit requests for desperately needed resources. Any individual can search student projects by areas of interest, learn about classroom needs and choose to fund the project he or she finds most compelling. Donors receive a feedback package including an expenditure report showing that their tax-deductible gift was spent as directed. DonorsChoose is now making this opportunity available to public schools in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama to assist in the hurricane relief effort. Donors already have contributed over $360,000 for schools in these four states. 11,868 students and 419 teachers at 170 schools have benefited so far funding 370 projects. In 2005 DonorsChoose won the Amazon.com Nonprofit Innovation Award and was recognized as "America's most innovative charity." To learn more about DonorsChoose, visit http://www.donorschoose.org.

2. Energetic, intelligent and involved young students have the opportunity of a life time. State Farm, through its service-learning efforts, has created the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. Members of the Young Board will play an important leadership role in creating and overseeing a $5 million/year signature service-learning initiative which will address pressing issues of importance to State Farm and communities across America. Board members will serve for either a one or two year term. Additionally, they will be required to attend at least three of the four in-person meetings at the State Farm corporate headquarters in Bloomington, Illinois or in other State Farm locations in the U.S. as well as through electronic communications between meetings. Visit http://www.statefarm.com/sfyboard.htm for details and applications.
