Teachers interested in earning the Master Teacher of Economics and/or a teacher holding the new "193" economics endorsement may attend the following summer workshops: MSU at Starkville June 2-6; USM Hattiesburg June 9-13; and Indianola June 9-13. Topics include Teaching Economics Through Children's Literature, Economics and Energy, Math and Personal Finance for Middle School teachers, Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics, Investor Education, Mini-Society, Making a Job, the Stock Market Game, AP Economics, and Post AP Economics. AT&T High School Success Special Grants Program announces $12 million in grants to help at-risk students complete high school successfully. Two types of grants are available: 1) Project support grants will be awarded for school districts with existing high school dropout prevention programs that have a successful track record of achieving effective results; 2) Planning/capacity-building support grants will be given for efforts that need additional planning and resources. The Mississippi Virtual Public School (MVPS) is accepting applications only for Advanced Placement online instructors. Interested applicants must have the 600 series endorsement on their Mississippi Educator's license or will have obtained this certification by the conclusion of the 2008 summer break. MVPS is a virtual learning environment where teachers facilitate online courses. The Office of Coordinated School Health and the Mississippi Alliance for School Health is sponsoring the second annual Wellness in My School Contest. The organizations eligible for participation include: FCCLA, FBLA, DECA, NTHA, FFA, HOSA, TSA, Skills USA, FEA and any other MDE sanctioned student organization. Cash awards will be given to the top three winners, and winning projects will be presented during the Mississippi Institute for School Health, Wellness and Safety in September 2008. Earn a graduate degree in curriculum, instruction, and special education with an emphasis in gifted education at the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. Scholarships are available for persons enrolled in graduate degree programs in gifted education for Summer of 2008. To qualify, the student must meet the admission requirements of the university for master's, specialist's, or doctoral programs with an emphasis in gifted education. Consideration will be given to graduate students in specialized programs in elementary and secondary schools and for the college and university positions in the field of gifted education.
