bsu-announce: THIS WEEK -- 10 MAY 99

Blessings on you during this exam time.

Will you be around this summer?
We will have summer Priority
in the Chapel of Memories at 7 PM on Tuesdays.
Invite your friends,
and help spread the word.
These will be informal times of praise, worship,
Bible study, and fellowship.

Do you want to help with BASIC Training -
a Christian orientation to campus
life for new students? BT will be held
August 20 and 21. If you want to be a part
of the BT Team, drop by the BSU office
to fill out leadership application.

"After all, who in the ordinary way is likely to injure you for being
enthusiastic for good? And if it should happen that you suffer 'for
righteousness' sake,' that is a privilege. You need neither fear their
treats nor worry about them; simply concentrate on being completely
devoted to Christ in your hearts. Be ready at any time to give a quiet and
reverent answer to any man who wants a reason for the hope that you have
within you. Make sure that your conscience is perfectly clear, so that if
men should speak slanderously of you as rouges they may come to feel
ashamed of them for libeling your good Christian behavior. Remember that
Christ the just suffered for us the unjust, to bring us to God. That meant
the death of His body, but He came to life again in the spirit." 1 Peter
3.13-18 (Phillips Modern English)

"The chief end of doing good is doing good. Nothing more. Nothing less. If
a person is to suffer in this world, then let it be for doing something
worth doing. Something that might end up being a help and blessing for
others, whether deserved or not. To be 'set apart' is to act, react, and
enact in ways that may not fit into the traditional definition. It's to be
ready to 'give a reason for the hope that you have' - that includes
thoughts and words but is also evidenced by the way a life is lived. If
suffering is an aspect of being human and alive, then for the person of
faith suffering for good is to be much preferred than suffering for evil.
Whether understood or not, our own minds and hearts are clear, and we can
exist with a clear conscience and a reputation for gentleness and respect.
...." Keith Tonkel's sermon notes on 1 Peter 3.13-18. Keith is pastor of
Wells Church in Jackson, MS.
