We do teach keyboarding in our lab as round robin for 6th graders - not a point I agree with as I believe it prohibits our course from being used to its fullest potential. But we still concentrate on keyboarding the first nine weeks of 8th grade - can't understand how you can't. Without it, most will surely not finish the lessons later on in the year. But that brings up another question. I got a student half way through the year who almost went into cardiac arrest when I covered his hands for a timed writing - said his last teacher allowed them to watch their hands the whole time. He could not type anything at all, not even home keys. Now we all know by now that 8th graders are not always completely honest; hopefully this student falls into the same category as my own two wonderful, beautiful, delightful (no longer teenage) daughters who would sometimes tell a small bit less than the full truth if it was to their advantage!! No, keyboarding in my class is a very important part of the grade EVERY nine weeks of the year - much to the disappointment of many students!!! You sound like you do it much the same way I do. From talking to the student I was told that their CD classes didn't teach keyboarding because it was taught in the 6th grade. I didn't see how this was possible with the curriculum being state mandated. I was told by the other CD teacher that she'd heard some taught keyboarding at the end of the year instead of the beginning. I was wondering what the your different methods of teaching keyboarding were. I do intense keyboarding the first 9 weeks so that the keys are learned before the work we do ongoing throughout the rest of the year. Then keyboarding is continued at least 1 day a week throughout the year and when Horizon assignments are finished. Teresa Moss Jones Middle School
