computerdisc-l: Webwhacker

I've replied to all because I thought some others may be interested in
Webwhacker.

Webwhacker is a wonderful, inexpensive program that downloads entire sites.
It is fairly easy to use. The only thing is you have to decide how many
links you want. You have to spend some time looking at the site to decide
how far you want to go. Then it appears they are on the Internet- they can
browse, etc. The drawback is that they can not "search". I downloaded
several sites a few years ago for specific areas for other teachers so that
their students could do a specific assignment in class. Another drawback
is - it takes a good connection, space and a good deal of time. When I
first tried it my connection kept getting disrupted and I'd have to start
over when I came back to class. Once you get it done it is great. It only
cost about $40 and it's easy to use.

I created a home page on my server using basic HTML code (very basic). I
then made links to all of the different sites I downloaded. I've added
some as time when on - sites are well used. I even downloaded some
shareable jpgs and gifs (animated too) that my students have used for
Hyperstudio. An aside, be careful - I downloaded a site and in the deep
recesses of a link there were pictures of scantily clad women - I found out
when a student did a home page with a link to them. (I quickly deleted the
jpg).It was hard not to see the humor in the teacher's error, but when a
preacher's son found it I was very embarassed.

It's a great program and does give them some "Internet" use. Let me know
if you have any other questions.

Cynthia

Cynthia,
How did using webwhacker work for you. I have been thinking of trying
this,
but I would be interested in your thoughts. I am at an E site and this if
my
first year with CD. We have net access, but I am a little hesitant to let
some
of my "students" on the web after hearing what they say they do at home.
 We
have border manager protection in our firewall, but nothings perfect.

 Thanks,
 Ron
