I do believe they need to experience email.  I also had some of the problems
you are describing.  No matter how hard you preach to them about not sharing
passwords, they still do.  I had trouble with students talking ugly about
classmates and as all teenagers are bound to do, one of them would forward
it to the person in question and feelings got hurt.  We discontinued email a
few weeks ago due to very inappropriate graphics being forwarded around.  I
don't know what the answer is here.  I just don't have the time needed to
monitor it well enough to feel comfortable telling parents, "Yes, it is
monitored!"  I am sure you understand that too.  We set up keypals with
another class in another city and had at least two instances of "threats"
being mailed to my students.  I would love to hear some other comments on
this subject.
