computerdisc-l: Works vs Word

I have another matter I would like to hear from you on.  Our entire
school system uses WORD except my lab.  My students cannot use computers
in our areas because they are not familiar with WORD.  The students I
have had in previous years are sent back to me in my lab when research
papers, reports, etc. are due because they only know Works if they have
not taken another computer class.  My admin wants my lab to teach WORD
also.  I worry about students moving from school to school, etc.  Any
thoughts and ideas on this?
