Survey Finds Tests Not Enough to Measure Student Achievement

Educational technology professionals say they want more than just test
scores to measure student achievement, according to results of a survey
taken at the National School Boards Association's Annual Technology +
Learning Conference, held earlier this month in Atlanta, Ga. Of those
surveyed, 90 percent said the best criteria to determine if a school is
performing well is to evaluate student work over significant periods of
time. Of the teachers, district technology coordinators, school board
members and administrators who responded to the survey, 65 percent said a
national standardized test would not help improve student achievement.
Forty-three percent said standardized tests are not effective because they
are not tied closely to the curriculum, and 28 percent said that too much
time is spent preparing for taking the tests. The survey was conducted
through e-mail notification of registrants for the 2001 Technology +
Learning Conference. For more information on the NSBA, visit their Web site,

National Energy Foundation Launches Student Challenge

K-12 students in the United States and most of Canada are invited to
participate in the National Energy Foundation's "Igniting Creative Energy"
challenge, an educational competition designed to encourage students to
learn more about energy and the environment. Entries should reflect the
competition theme, "Igniting Creative Energy," and demonstrate an
understanding of what an individual, family or group can do to make a
difference in energy conservation and the environment in their home or
community. Entries can be in the form of science projects, essays, stories,
artwork, photographs, music, video or Web sites. The top three students will
attend the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Also, the
teacher with the greatest quantity of quality entries, based on the
challenge rules, will win the same trip. One project will be chosen for
publication in the Energy Excellence Booklet and posted on the foundation's
official Web site. The deadline is Dec. 15, 2001, and winners will be
announced on or before Jan. 2, 2002. For more information and to download
the entry form, visit http://www.ignitingcreativeenergy.org.

Creative Project Connects U.S. Teachers to "World Classrooms"

K-8 Teachers are invited to participate in The Creative Connections Project,
which links U.S. classrooms and those from other parts of the globe with
classrooms in the Amazon rain forest, Africa and the Arctic through art
exchanges, study partnerships, e-mail and the Internet. The project is
sponsored by The New York Foundation for the Arts, with help from The Avery
Foundation and WorldTeach Inc. of the Harvard Institute for International
Development. Registration deadlines are Dec. 1, 2001, for the Amazon rain
forest component; Jan. 1, 2002, for the Africa component; and April 1, 2002,
for the Arctic component. Detailed project information is available at
http://www.ccph.com/projects.html. For additional information, contact Paul
Hurteau at Creative Connections via e-mail mailto:ph@ccph.com or call (581)
