One child, you said, has cerebral palsy, which is a condition many of us know very little about. When you wrote me, you weren't sure how the second student was diagnosed. Fortunately, you've been given this extra time to collect some strategies and basic information that will enrich your classroom environment for all of your students. I've put together this collection of links to some articles and websites that will get you started. All of us face the challenge of meeting our students' special needs every day. Hopefully, you'll find the search techniques I used helpful whenever you need strategies and resources for addressing other students' needs. The rest of this week's special edition Teacher Tips outlines my search for help on this specific disability and how you might incorporate the information you find into your website. While you're at it, don't forget that this is a great learning opportunity for the rest of your class. If this is their first experience with a handicapped child, they'll need special help and direction from you. I've located two articles explaining what cerebral palsy is, and how it affects, people that should be just right for your students to read, discuss, and understand. Make sure you use your classroom website effectively, too. The Classroom Links template will make it quick and easy for you to link some of these informative articles to your site so other parents can read them. The Events Calendar and Homework Assignments templates will record assignments for your students who can't write legibly and make sure parents receive timely notices of special events and classroom activities. Use Quiz Lab to put some of your quizzes online. It may be much easier for your special needs students to work with an online quiz rather than struggle with pen or pencil to write out an answer. Put a link directly to your Quiz Lab area on your website. Add games from FunBrain that reinforce this week's lessons. I hope you find this helpful. Happy holidays! So, I used Google.com for my initial search for cerebral palsy resources. My search phrase was simply "activities for kids with cerebral palsy." Google located a great collection of articles and sites to scan. Here are links to some of them. *Basic Information Strictly speaking, cerebral palsy is a condition resulting from an injury and not an illness. The problem is that CP doesn't have just one specific set of disabilities. It may, in fact, impact a number of systems: hearing, speech, locomotion, and so on. The degree of impairment will vary from one person to the next. You'll need to scan these articles to get an understanding of what you might see and then start building your collection of adaptive lessons. Have a couple of lessons and adaptive strategies ready for your first few days while you meet your new students. It's important for you to do an initial assessment of their special needs during these first days, then add more lessons that suit their specific needs. *What Is Cerebral Palsy? http://send.familyeducation.com:9956/T/A2.78.3089.2.1684632 The Internet Health Library has a great article about CP.
