SAFEGUARDING THE WIRED SCHOOLHOUSE ARCHIVED FOR VIEWING Safeguarding the Wired Schoolhouse, originally telecast on Oct 4, is now available via the Webcast archive at http://ali.apple.com/events/serc2. This teleconference was the first in a series of satellite/webcast events specifically for technology leaders developed by CoSN and the Satellite Education Resources Consortium (SERC). Safeguarding the Wired Schoolhouse addresses the requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act, guidance for E-rate recipients, protection options, acceptable use policies, and information literacy promotion are also discussed. BE WARNED ABOUT "PORN-NAPPING" We've reported before about "cyber-squatters" who have reclaimed Internet domains that have been abandoned by legitimate groups, including some in the education area, frequently turning them into gambling or pornography sites. Last week, CoSN announced that the EDvancenet Web site for technology leadership Development, which it co-sponsors with the National School Boards Association and the MCI WorldCom Foundation, had been "porn-napped." The organizations are working to purchase the domain back as soon as possible. Meanwhile, anyone who is linking to Edvancenet.org should change the link to http://www.cosn.org/edvancenet until further notice. The Online Internet Institute has begun to track the buy-up and conversion of education sites for non-education uses. OII has created a mechanism for such sites to be reported at http://oii.org/html/porn-napping.shtml. BE AN ONLINE TEACHER LEADER Looking for something to do next semester? Project VISIT, an NSF-supported online professional development program for high school teachers, is seeking teachers to help lead the program during February - May, 2002. Teacher leaders, who will spend between 2 and 4 hours per week on the project, should have experience in Geographic Information Systems, facilitating online teacher development activities; or teaching environmental science, chemistry, biology, geography, technology, or other science/social science at the high school level. Online training and coaching for leaders will be provided. For more information about VISIT, please go to http://www.emich.edu/visit. US OPEN E-LEARNING CONSORTIUM LAUNCHED The first meeting of the US Open e-Learning Consortium took place recently. The consortium is an open coalition of 14 states that intend to share public-owned design ideas and documents, application and database code, and educational content for open e-learning systems and explore mutually advantageous federal and foundation funding options. Participants envision their collaboration extending to many aspects of online education, including assessment, technical standards, software features, administrative functions, and methods of cataloging information. The group's first project will be creating a model of an online system that lets states share test questions that are linked to state standards.
