TECHNOLOGY TEACHERS FOR RURAL SCHOOLS
Missouri's Linn State Technical College is offering a new Technology
Coordinator degree option designed to address issues surrounding rural
teacher education and the appropriate application of technology. The
18-month program combines on-campus training with and a year-long paid
internship in a rural Missouri school district.

CHICAGO KICKS OFF TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
By the end of May 2002, more than 6000 Chicago high school principals,
teachers and technology coordinators will be working with new laptop
computers loaded with helpful software and classroom tools. The project is
one of the key initiatives outlined in Chicago's Technology In the Service
of Teaching & Learning Plan.

I WANT MY INTERNET
One in three children would opt for the Internet if they had to make a
media choice, according to the findings of "How Children Use™ Media
Technology." Given a choice of six media, one-third of the children
interviewed reported that the Web would be the medium they would want to
have if they couldn't have any others.

HANDHELDS DELIVER IN CLASSROOMS
In one of the largest school implementations to date, District 230 in the
Chicago suburb of Orland Park has equipped its three high schools with
2,200 handheld computers. Teachers report that the use of the handhelds
has increased student productivity and efficiency across all disciplines.

JAPAN FIELDS WORLD'S FASTEST COMPUTER
The Earth Simulator Research and Development Center in Yokohama, west of
Tokyo, is home to the world's fastest computer. Composed of 5,104
processors, the machine has achieved a computing speed of 35.6 trillion
mathematical operations a second.

COSN, ISTE AND NEA FILE COMMENTS WITH THE FCC
The FCC received over 100 responses to its request for comments on the
FCC's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the E-Rate. The agency had
requested comment on various aspects of five major program areas: the
application process, the disbursement of funds, the appeals process,
program integrity assurance, and what to do with unused or unclaimed
funds. ISTE, COSN and NEA jointly filed comments addressing a wide-variety
of issues raised in the NPRM. A copy of full comments is posted at
http://www.cosn.org/resources/fcc.pdf . The second round of comments on
this NPRM is due on May 6.

WEBCASTS OF ANNENBERG/CPB MATERIALS
The Annenberg/CPB Channel is a satellite channel for education. It airs a
wide range of teacher professional development and instructional programs
funded by Annenberg/CPB. These programs are now being simulcast on the Web
via a broadband stream with no need for passwords or logins. With a simple
click of their mouse, K-12 teachers, college professors and education
leaders can readily access professional development materials in a wide

INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL SCHOOLING
The current edition of TechKnowLogia, at http://www.techknowlogia.org/,
has everything you ever wanted to know about Virtual Schooling, with an
international perspective. The issue includes 22 articles, written by top

REGIONAL MEETINGS ON ESEA REGULATIONS PLANNED
The Department of Education is hosting five regional meetings to help
educate the public about the critical need for challenging content
standards and high-quality assessments in K-12 education, and to give the
public an opportunity to comment on new rules for standards, assessments
and academic progress under ESEA legislation. The one-day public meetings
will take place May 6 in Cincinnati, May 7 in Atlanta, May 13 in San
Diego, and May 16 in Little Rock, Ark. A fifth meeting will be held near
New York City, with a date and exact location to be announced shortly.
