Faculty Colleagues: As reported at the General Faculty meeting on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, the new faculty title series that have been approved by the Faculty Senate (Spring, 2001) and implemented as O.P. 56.06/80.1 requires that the Charter of the Faculty be amended for consistency. The section of the Charter of the Faculty in question with modifications is attached and may also be found by following the link entitled "Faculty Handbook Changes" on the Faculty Senate website (http://www.facultysenate.msstate.edu). The proposed changes must be presented to the General Faculty for 30 days prior to a vote, and changes to the Charter require approval by 2/3 vote of the faculty. Please do not vote on this issue now. Ballots will be sent out in mid March. I will be happy to answer any questions you have. As a point of clarification, the General Faculty voted in the Spring 1999 to eliminate the rank of distinguished professor from the existing title series, but this change was never implemented in relevant documents. The new text will delete this rank. This does not represent a change in the Giles Distinguished Professor Program as it has been applied since 1999. Thank you for your consideration.
