Colleagues,
A Faculty Senate ad hoc committee has written a document covering academic, non-tenured instructional faculty. Specifically, the document covers instructors, lecturers and others who teach classes and who are not in tenure-track positions. This document was needed for the following reasons:
1. No university policy currently covers the employment conditions of these instructional lines;
2. IHL requires MSU to have in place documents that clearly delinate the differences between non-tenure track instructors and tenure-track professors;
3. The treatment of instructional faculty varies widely by department because there are no policies;
4. The goal of this document is to protect instructional faculty from exploitation, to provide written guidelines covering the conditions of their employment, and to provide a system of promotion.
The attachment is the current draft written by the ad hoc committee. Or you may view the document at: http://www.facultysenate.msstate.edu/InstructorsDoc.PDF
The committee is seeking comments before finalizing the document and sending it to the Faculty Senate in September. We would appreciate your comments by July 15, 2005. You may send those comments to Mail Stop: 9728 or you can send email comments to mgoodman@comm.msstate.edu.
If Faculty Senate approves the document, it will be sent to the President for his approval.
