fsfaculty: MG: Presidential Search

To: MSU Faculty

From: Mark Goodman, president of Robert Holland Faculty Senate

Re: Presidential Search

As you may know by now, the faculty are invited to meet with Tom Meredith, IHL Commissioner, and IHL members at 1 p.m. Wednesday (12-7) in Hunter Henry.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the presidential search process with the faculty and to obtain input on what the qualifications should be for president.  A large turnout of the faculty is important to impress on IHL the importance of this search to the faculty.

The actual search committee for the president is composed only of IHL members and Dr. Meredith.  The search committee will have an advisory committee.

Walter Diehl, past senate president, and I will be the senate nominees to the advisory committee.  Others who may be asked to make nominations are the student association, staff council, dean’s committee, department head’s committee, alumni association, the MSU vice-presidents, and the MSU foundation. This advisory committee will probably have no more than 25 members.  In contrast to the past search, IHL will not appoint the advisory committee.  The final makeup of the advisory committee will be decided by Dr. Meredith.

The voice of the faculty needs to be heard.  I believe that we need a faculty committee which will provide input to Walter and me.  Therefore, I have asked all senators to put their names forward to serve on the Faculty Senate Advisory Committee.  Since Meridian and the Library have one senator and the colleges of Architecture, Art & Design and Forestry only have two senators, their senators will automatically be put forward to their faculty.  Two of the four senators from the College of Veterinary Medicine have agreed to serve; these senators will be put forward to their faculty. The colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences/MAFES, Arts & Sciences, Business & Industry, Extension, Education, and Engineering will elect committee members from the senators already representing them on Faculty Senate.

An email containing a link to an electronic ballot will be sent to the faculty in each college/unit holding elections today (12/6).
