Colleagues:
In the next few days, you have the opportunity to see the new teacher evaluation forms. You will need to select the appropriate form for your class from these options:
* Small lecture (less than 50)
* Large lecture
* Studio class (ex: painting)
* Lab class (ex: physics lecture and lab)
* Web-based class
We believe these options will provide a more accurate and fair evaluations of teaching.
Faculty Senate is forming a committee to test the validity and reliability of these new forms. If you would like to serve on this committee, please email chair Mark Goodman (mg654460@yahoo.com).
Since the new forms have not been tested, we are asking that the fall results go ONLY to you, the faculty member. You may use the results in annual reviews or promotion/tenure, if you wish. If, however, your teaching evaluation is used without your consent in this year’s annual review, please let me know by emailing rwolverton@fl.msstate.edu.
Another change in the evaluation process is the way the results are to be incorporated into the annual review process. The new Academic Operating Procedure states that the results of the survey are only to be used to track trends on teaching. This change reflects the reality that there is probably no statistical difference between an instructor receiving a 4.0 and one receiving a 3.5.
It will take time, but Faculty Senate is working to create a Teaching Evaluation form in which all can have confidence.
