Richard, since I started growing in '98 my ratio has changed from about 10%
retail 90% wholesale to about 36% retail 64% wholesale.

My wholesale price is and always has been higher to cover those pesky little
labels, invoicing, and transportation. Selling retail at a lower price is
stilling netting about the same. The real issue is volume. A grocery store
can take 1000# at a time a couple of time per week. Most people only manage
a 10# box per visit.

If someone doesn't get off the pot and get these fuel prices down to a
respectable level, I'll be adding a fuel surcharge on my invoice next year.
Of course by November election time, there should be enough hot air
generated to fuel America!

What percentage of greenhouse tomato growers would you say sell at least
some of their fruit direct to consumers? Or do most of you sell primarily
through local retailers?
