Title: NCSU online course in Greenhouse and High Tunnel Food Production
HS 543 Greenhouse and High Tunnel Food Production (3cr) will be offered
Spring Semester 2009. This is a graduate credit course offered for a grade
(ABCD) which meets requirements for the Certificate Program in Horticultural
Science. Information about this and other online horticulture courses and
the Certificate in Horticultural Science is available at:
http://web.mac.com/kpaigel/certificate/Home.html. Fliers for all courses are

Controlled environment agriculture is an increasingly important segment of
the vegetable industry. Greenhouse and High Tunnel Food Production (HS 543)
allows students to apply basic plant science principles to optimize plant
response to environment and nutrition in greenhouses and high tunnels.
Topics include: protected agriculture production practices, especially for
tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce; selecting structures, greenhouse and high
tunnel climate control; nutrition and rootzone management; EC and pH
management, pest and disease management; biocontrols, aquaponics; and
organic production.
First class is Jan 8, 2007 Thursday 4:35-6:25 pm Room 202 Poe Hall, NCSU, Raleigh
NC 27695. A distance site at Craven Community College has been identified at
this point, but will be dropped if there is not sufficient interest. Other
sites within NC can be requested, but please let me know as soon as possible. For
those unable to attend on-campus classes, HS 543 lectures can also be
accessed online via the MediaServe system. All course work may be completed online
with the exception of a half day on-campus hydroponics and grafting
demonstration in early March and a 1-2 day field trip to commercial
greenhouses just before Easter Break.
