ˇ NATIONAL TOY DESIGN CHALLENGE
Program: The Sally Ride Science Club and Smith College announce the launch of Toy Challenge, a national toy design competition that will encourage boys' and girls' interest in engineering and inspire them to pursue careers in this area.  The winners of the contest, which is sponsored by Hasbro, Inc., will be announced at the National Showcase in June 2003.
Deadline: January 31, 2003
Funding: Prizes will be awarded at each stage of the competition.  The three grand prizes include: a week at Space Camp for each team member; a personalized Hasbro action figure and behind-the-scenes tour at Hasbro; a VIP tour of NASA's Kennedy Space Center for the team members and their families, and a private question and answer session with an astronaut.
Eligibility: Middle school boys and girls, but at least half the members of each team must be girls.

ˇ OUTSTANDING YOUNG EDUCATOR AWARD
Program: The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) has created this new award to honor an emerging education leader achieving excellence and equity in teaching and learning.

Funding: One award of $10,000.  The winner will also be profiled in ASCD's magazine and their school will receive free ASCD membership.
Eligibility: ASCD members can nominate colleagues aged 40 or younger whose innovative teaching and leadership has had an impact on student achievement.

ˇ GENDER DIVERSITY IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION 
Program: This program seeks to broaden the participation of girls and young women in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by supporting research, demonstration, and dissemination projects that will lead to change in education policy and practice.
Deadline: For elementary and middle schools, letters of intent are due December 20, 2002 and proposals are due January 31, 2003.  For high school, undergraduate, teacher and faculty development, and educational technologies, preliminary proposals are due January 23, 2003.
Funding: $900,000 for projects up to 3 years, with an estimated 15 to 20 grants awarded annually.  A large demonstration project may be up to $30,000 for up to 18 months.

ˇ RADIOSHACK NATIONAL TEACHERS AWARDS
Program: The RadioShack National Teacher Awards (RSNTA) honors our nation's outstanding high school mathematics, science, and technology educators.  The organization is seeking exceptional, innovative teachers who instill a spirit of intellectual curiosity, innovation, and competitiveness into today's students.
Deadline: November 8, 2002
Funding: A total of 110 awards will be made in two categories:
§ Experienced high school teachers: 100 full-time math, science, or technology teachers with more than three years of teaching experience will receive a cash stipend of $3,000.
§ Beginning high school teachers: 10 full time math, science, or technology teachers who have completed one year and are in their second or third year of high school teaching will receive a cash stipend of $1,000.
Eligibility: High school principals and/or past RSNTA prize recipients must make nominations.  All applicants currently teaching at least three classes in mathematics, science, or technology.  To participate, your school must be enrolled in the RSNTA program.  Three experienced and three beginning teachers (for a total of six teachers ) may be nominated per high school.  Teachers may be re-nominated; however, cash award winners may not reapply.

ˇ AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION NATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION
Program: This event is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry in partnership with NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and numerous educational organizations.  The challenge for students is to design, build, and fly a model rocket carrying two raw eggs, as close as possible, to 1,500 feet.  The top 100 teams will compete in a fly-off in northern Virginia in May 2003.
Deadline: November 15, 2002
Funding: Five winning student teams will share a total prize pool of $59,000.  In addition, three of the top ten teams are eligible to win $2,500 grants, including travel expenses, to launch an advanced rocket with NASA, and attend Space Camp.  Each of the top 25 teams' schools will be invited to send one teacher on an all expenses paid trip to attend an advanced NASA rocketry workshop, meet with NASA scientists and engineers, and tour the Marshall Space Flight Center.

ˇ ENHANCING EDUCATION THROUGH TECHNOLOGY
Program: The Florida Department of Education offers this program to improve student academic achievement through the use of technology in elementary and secondary schools:
§ to assist every student in crossing the digital divide,
§ to ensure that every student is technologically literate by the time the student finishes the eighth grade, and
§ to encourage the effective integration of technology resources and systems with training and curriculum development to establish research-based instructional methods that can be widely implemented as best practices.

ˇ STAPLES FOUNDATION FOR LEARNING
Program: The Staples Foundation funds programs that support or provide job skills and educational opportunities for all people, with special emphasis on disadvantaged youths.
Deadline: Grant decisions will be made on a quarterly basis, and all requests must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the foundation's meeting.  Upcoming meeting dates are scheduled for January 7, 2003 and April 1, 2003.

Program: Cingular telephone company supports community-based programs and nonprofit organizations that focus on educational, cultural, and social issues that affect communities where Cingular employees work and live.

ˇ CRAFTSMAN/NSTA YOUNG INVENTORS PROGRAM
Program: The Craftsman/National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Young Inventors Awards Program challenges students to use creativity and imagination along with science, technology, and mechanical ability to invent or modify a tool.  This competition began in 1996. 
Deadline: All entries must be received by March 4, 2003.  Late or faxed entries will not be accepted. 
Funding: The two national winners (one from grades 2-5 and one from grades 6-8) will each receive a $10,000 United States EE-series savings bond.  The 10 national finalists (five from each grade category) will each receive a $5,000 United States EE-series savings bond.  The winning teachers and schools will receive prizes from Sears, Roebuck and Company retail stores. 
The 12 second-place regional winners (six from each grade category) will each receive a $500 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond.  The 12 third-place regional winners (six from each grade category) will each receive a $250 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond.   Every student who enters the competition with a completed entry will receive a personalized certificate of appreciation and a small gift. 
Eligibility: The 2003 Young Inventors Awards Program is open to all students in grades 2-8 in the United States and the U.S. Territories.  Students must work independently to conceive and design their tool inventions.  The student, with guidance from a teacher/advisor, parent, or significant adult, will design and build a tool.  The tool must perform a practical function, including (but not limited to) tools that mend, make life easier or safer in some way, entertain, or solve an everyday problem. 
Students must send in the completed form (signed by the student, parent, and teacher/advisor), Inventor's Log (must be 3-7 pages in length), diagram of the tool, and a photograph of the student demonstrating the tool.

Program: This foundation supports technology-related projects in four major areas of priority:

ˇ SMARTER KIDS FOUNDATION GRANTS
Program: The SMARTer Kids Foundation provides the following grants and programs to eligible K-12 schools and learning institutions:
§ SMARTer Kids Grants are available for SMART Roomware products, including the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and SMART Expression cabinet.
§ Grants are available for SMART Master's Programs, in-depth sessions to help you integrate SMART Board interactive whiteboards into the classroom. 
§ NEC Technologies, Visual Systems Division, and the SMARTer Kids Foundation are working together to enrich the learning experience while keeping technology costs to a minimum.
§ PREP Grant - worth up to 70% of the list price of SMART Roomware products are available for teacher-training facilities.
§ Connections - A collaborative learning and exchange program for grade five and six classes across North America.
§ Teaching Excellence Awards - recognize and reward teachers who have made a significant impact on their students, schools or communities. 
§ Biz Kids - this grant transfer initiative allows schools to transfer Roomware product grants to organizations willing to assist in purchasing the product.
§ SMARTer Kids Research - browse our research library exploring the effects of technology on teaching and learning. Research areas include Special Education, Math and Computer Games.

ˇ VIRTUAL INK CORPORATION
Program: Each month, Virtual Ink awards a free mimioŽ to the winning educator who submits the most original, innovative, or creative entry incorporating the use of mimioŽ at their school.  MimioŽ is a digital collaborative technology for PC and Mac platforms that attaches to any whiteboard and electronically captures everything that is written or drawn - in color and in real-time.  
Deadline: Awards applications are reviewed at the beginning of every month.

SPACE DAY
As the nation prepares to commemorate the centennial of flight in the coming year, Space DaySM 2003*Celebrating the Future of Flight will honor the past 100 years of aviation and aerospace accomplishments while seeking to inspire the next generation of inventors, aviators, and explorers.
Space DaySM, established in 1997, is an award-winning educational initiative that focuses on math, science, engineering, and technology education.  This year's events, co-chaired by Senator John Glenn, will take place on May 1.
Space DaySM programs include the Space Day Design Challenge, where students collaborate as they create solutions to challenges of living in space; Student Signatures in SpaceŽ, which sends digitized student signatures on a space shuttle mission; and Cyber Space DaySM, the only annual webcast devoted to science, space, and math.
