Introduction

Hello all.

My name is Jay Trevorrow, and I am currently the Technology Coordinator
for the Jay School Department in Jay, Maine (yeah, it's neat when they
name the place after you).

I came across this course in a posting on the Classroom Connect list and
thought that it was the perfect adjunct for my eternal graduate work at
the University of New Hampshire, my work here in Jay and my own
professional development.

I came to Maine years ago as a refugee from Connecticut - the greater
NYC area; I was probably a "back to the lander" of the 60's ilk actually,
but found it all too much work and ran back to the late 20th century as
quickly as I could. We just went through an ice storm up here recently -
ten days without electricity, loading the wood stove, carrying
water........a low tech experience to be sure.

I've come to technology gradually over the past decade while investing
over twenty years as an English and Latin teacher, football and lacrosse
coach, floor sweeper, et al (schools let you do all sorts of things - the
last bastion for generalists?) in secondary schools in various parts of
New England. Six years or so ago I left the classroom to join an
educational consulting group here in Maine, a job which eventually
evolved into working with schools around varied technology issues.
Ultimately, I decided to go back in the box of working in a
district......and here I am.

Jay is a very small school department (1000 students) in Central Maine,
which has some techno-ambition, some money (International Paper is a
terrific taxpayer), but needs coherence and direction.....that's a large
part of why I am here, and my sense that this stuff is at its most
powerful the more remote we are.....like in Jay, Maine.

I've started reading Empires of the Mind, have been examining a couple of
plans on the Web here in Maine and will get a review page up soon. I'm
ready and am glad to be working at this with all of you.
