We all are most familiar with the ever present inner struggle between the
right way to respond to situations and adversity and
the opposite (and what we so often WANT to do).  Certainly this daily
choice must be even more important (and perhaps more difficult in many
situations)  for the TEACHER - that often frustrated person who daily
guides and molds the lives of our children and young people. 

The following piece seems to speak well to this and, hopefully, may
encourage us to be a little more careful in our decisions.  It appeared in
the Fall, 1997, edition of the Mississippi Music Educators Journal, copied
from the Texas Choral Directors Journal.

			The Eagle and Wolf

	There is a great battle that rages inside me.
	One side is the soaring eagle.
	Everything the eagle stands for is good and true and 
	   beautiful, and it soars above the clouds.
	Even though it dips down into the valleys, it lays its
	   eggs on the mountain tops.

	The other side of me is the howling wolf.
	And, that howling wolf represents the worst that's in me.
	He eats upon my downfalls and justifies himself by his 
	   presence in the pack.

	Who wins this great battle?

			The one I feed.
