** Call for Papers: Special Issue **
Embedding Ubiquitous Use of Educational Technology: is it possible, do we
want it,
and, if so, how do we achieve it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are different explanations for why many teachers have not yet got to
grips with
learning and teaching technologies, from technophobia through lack of
staff development
to the pedagogical inappropriateness of the technologies to hand. There
are those who
think this is not important, and that the 'teacher' will go the way of the
dinosaur to
be replaced by 'intelligent teaching engines' supervised by deskilled
teaching assistants.
Each phase of educational technology in the 20th century has had its
enthusiasts, but
ubiquitous use has proved elusive, and predictions of the end of public
educational
institutions as we know them have proved premature.
We are calling for proposals for contributions of the following kind:
- Reflective discussions of the problems involved in embedding the use of
educational
technologies, looking at the tensions between teachers, pedagogy,
technology, and
institutional management etc, and drawing on the literature in this field
(up to 7,000
words).
- Case studies of attempts to diffuse and embed technologies in
universities, colleges,
schools, or industrial and commercial training, with a critical
perspective on
success/failure (up to 5,000 words).
- Experiential 'snapshots' from personal practice with a unique,
innovative flavour
(up to 1,500 words).
- Challenges to the 'conventional' ways of viewing this theme, which draw
upon modern
technology studies, eg in social science and political economy (up to
5,000 words).
- Book reviews or literature reviews of relevance to the special theme (up
to 1,500 words).
-----------------------
Initial proposals should be brief and no more than 500 words, and sent to
the guest editor
by Friday April 2nd 1999. Please do not send complete articles until the
editor has first
agreed your proposal.
