Internet Society Call for ThinkQuest Junior Judges

ThinkQuest Junior http://www.advanced.org/thinkquestjr.html is a web based
competition that offers an opportunity for students grades 4 through 6 to
learn about the Internet, to work with other students and to create
exciting tools and materials that will help educate other students in “the
Internet style” of learning.

Inspired by the success of ThinkQuest, ThinkQuest Junior is a program that
engages the strong interest of younger students in computers and the
Internet. $125,000 of Awards in cash, computers and networking resources
will go to the winning Students, Coaches and their Schools.

In this contest, Students collaborate in the "Internet Style" of learning
an interactive, participatory style that encourages them to explore the
Internet's timely resources and create new relationships that broaden the
community in which they live. ThinkQuest Junior provides a structure for
integrating computers and the Internet into everyday classroom activities.

In the ThinkQuest Junior contest, Students in grades 4 through 6, form
Teams of up to six Students. These Teams, under the guidance of their
Coaches, create educational Web sites, called Entries, that make learning
fun, exploratory and contagious and take full advantage of the strengths of
the Internet.

The contest is sponsored by Advanced Network and Services,
(http://www.advanced.org) and endorsed by The GlobalSchoolnet,
(http://www.gsn.org) and the Internet Society (http://www.isoc.org)

The Internet Society manages the judging process for this unique
educational competition and is currently seeking individuals to serve as
Judges.

Candidates must have experience with web-based learning and understand the
collaborative and interactive nature that the Internet brings to learning.

The judging period will begin on Thursday April 1st 1999 and be completed
by Monday April 19, 1999. During that time Judges will need to evaluate
20-25 different web sites and provide scoring on a web based Judging
System. Judges must have at least Netscape 4.0, Internet Explorer 4.0 or
similar product and be able to download plugins if necessary.

An honorarium will be provided.

If you would be interested in participating, or would like more
information, please complete the following application
http://members.thinkquest.org/tqapp/judging/apply.html
as soon as possible and no later than March 26, 1999. If you know a
colleague who would also be interested, please forward this application to
their attention.
Please feel free to forward any questions about the program to

Subject: E-rate Funding Per Student, by State

Per-child funding commitments for the first year of the E-rate program
ranged from a high of $88.92 in the state of Alaska to a low of $7.20 in
New
Hampshire, an analysis by the E-rate consulting firm Funds For Learning
shows.

The average amount committed per child in the 50 states and the District of
Columbia was $30.39, while the median was $27.03 cents.

Six other states and the District of Columbia topped $50 or more per child:
Kentucky ($70.66), District of Columbia ($64.89), Alabama ($58.68), Georgia
($55.52), New Mexico ($51.69), New York ($51.10), and Oklahoma ($50.00). At
the other end of the spectrum, six states received less than $13 per
student: Maine ($12.82), Utah ($12.56), Maryland ($12.39), Wyoming
($11.94), Delaware ($7.98) and New Hampshire.

The analysis was based on figures distributed by the Schools and Libraries
Division and 1996 figures from the National Center for Educational
Statistics on the number of school-age children in each state. For the

To achieve America's goals in Educational Excellence, it is NASA's mission
to develop supplementary instructional materials and curricula in science,
mathematics, and technology. NASA seeks to involve the educational
community
in the development and improvement of these materials. NASA needs good
teachers to pilot educational materials before they are released publicly.

In particular, the GSFC Earth and Space Sciences Education Project (GESSEP)
is seeking teachers to pilot test over 50 student investigations, for
grades
5-12, that use satellite data to investigate topics related to Earth system
science, climate, and weather.

If you are one of those teachers who thrive on being on the cutting edge
and
keeping abreast of innovative developments in your profession, NASA can use
your help. Before registering, it is suggested that you look at the
investigation abstracts at the URL identified above and choose several that
fit into your curriculum or are topics that you want to add to your
curriculum. Go to those investigations and review them thoroughly. Decide
when you want to pilot each investigation that you have selected and then
return to the pilot site and complete the registration form.
