Jim Langley, a specialist at the Department of Research and Development,
and Cindy Lee Martin, an Education Technology Specialist, outline the steps
in educational planning. They are on the Board of Education in Alberta,
Canada. Their district consists of 212 schools with 96,000 students and
6,000 teachers. A main goal was to develop a system for technology planning
for the schools.
Ms. Martin stressed that there is no chronological order for this
plan-you go in and out of the plan.
1. Understanding the external forces that effect our schools
relevant to the education process.
a. investigate planning- What plans have been developed?
b. have a technology scanning committee to critique other
technology plans
c. research, gather data, and conduct an internal scan
2. Assessing the school's capacity for change.
a. conduct a technology survey in all schools
b. conduct an internal scan to determine what technology
is already in place
c. conduct a survey of technology used in classrooms
d. conduct a survey to address technology of classrooms
applications
e. determine the district belief or vision for technology
and learning
f. review all documents published
This is used to assess our current stand for technology.
3. The committee writes the visions and goals from the
committee group feedback- wrote three drafts
School Improvement Process includes:
1. Meaningful learning opportunities
2. A plan for each school
3. Staff will access the technology
4. Set goals and actions
Assist schools in developing the technology plans
5. Prepare budget proposals for 70 schools
6. Reviewing process for accountability
We can achieve our vision by charting our process.
