I felt that the conference with Bob Hughes was "awesome." It was good to
know that our test scores, compared with other countries, are exceptional
when using the same comparisons. He listed several problem areas:
1. Kids are coming to school less prepared. They are not ready to learn.
They are brining more baggage with them. (We can certainly attest to
that).
2. These students are more prepared than their parents. Basic education
has jumped to a higher level, and our students are going to have to reach
that level for successful employment in the future. Learn as they go
forward.
3. Students should not pass until they have met a level of proficiency.
4. Implementation of technology into schools.
5. Everything from the "neck" down is going to be minimum wage.
6. "You might shoot for the moon and miss, but you are still with the
stars."
7. "Micro-chasm"--middle class is getting smaller.
8. He is the messenger. Keep having messenger.
9. Email address: toysrbob.com
10. "To think globally, act locally."
11. When you establish higher standards in math, English, or history
the gap widens. Rich----poor
12. Train people to think differently. Cognitive magnifier.
13. Communities may have bars on windows and live in gated communities.
14. Education is key deterrent.
15. Used an example in the movie "Private Ryan"--"What are you going to
do to earn it."
This was a very dynamic experience listening to Bob Hughes. Hopefully, we
are going to "earn it" as technology leaders.
