Two Educational Technology Specialists, Jim Langley and Cindy Lee
Martin of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, presented their ideas on planning via
a video presentation.
They stressed the impact good strategic planning has on a school system
and then presented their steps for such planning. They first mentioned the
external forces that affect the plan. One thing they did was to examine
existing technology plans in order to glean ideas. I think this is a good
idea, as it will help you decide what is appropriate for your school system.
They also accessed a school's capacity for change. They sent surveys to
school to determine the classrooms' technological needs. Langley and Martin
added a section to the survey to receive even more information on class
applications than the original survey asked. They studied internal aspects
of their school system. For example the survey and they studied district
documents.
A committee assigned to the planning process then drafts a vision and
basic "blueprint" for their technology plan. The committee sends their plan
to administrators and teachers for their input. This plan is then returned
to the committee for revision.
The school district wants a plan that is a real benefit to students, to
be accessible to teachers and staff and each school should have a plan of
its own.
The committee then sets a timeline for the goals to be met and
implemented. They mentioned that it is extremely important to have
administrative support for technology. A budget is also a concern. One
must be planned and the funds made available in order to make the "dream" a
reality.
Finally, the plan will be evaluated and a committee will review it for
its effectiveness.
