I was struck with the statement that Mr. Hughes made, "Kids today come to
school less prepared to learn." It was amazing to hear those words come
from a school board member. He understands that no longer are we teaching
children from "our neighborhood". He also said, "To get a job today, you
must be more prepared that your parents." That summarizes the challenge
that teachers face, because they are responsible for trying to meet the
needs of those arrive ready and those who do not. I thought his discussion
of "everything from the neck down is minimum wage" and his story about
"Web campaigning" were very provocative.
