tkt8763-01: Bob Hughes

Bob Hughes had come very true and inspirational thoughts to share with us.
I am in the online class, and I listened from my home, so I am sure I did
not catch everything with the same quality as you did, but it was still
great. The first thing that immediately caught my attention was that
"kids are coming to school less prepared." I teach Kindergarten in
Montgomery County, which is a critical teacher shortage area; therefore, I
can relate first hand to the children coming to school less prepared and
with so much baggage. I have found it extremely difficult to get any help
from parents, because of the baggage they also carry. He also said that
our generation has to be even more prepared than our parents. This is
extremely true. We have a responsibility to teach the students more than
the basics. He also said that the gap between the upper and lower class
is getting greater, abd that the public schools have a responsibility to
maintain the middle class. He has a true dream to help the public school
systems and the world. I loved the quote that Dr. Anderson gave: "If you
shoot for the moon and miss, you are still among the stars." This gives
me hope, because I leave my classroom so many days feelings as though I
failed, but I tried. In the eyes of my students, I know that at least
they felt loved that day. This converstaion really gave new meaning to my
career. I feel that I have an even greater purpose as a teacher.
