Bob Hughes spoke to our class via teleconference. He says he wants to
keep people involved for a lifetime in learning. He said with the right
equipment you can pass work around the world, for example using a cell
phone, pager, and a lap top.
He says his school district gives computers to those who will actually
use the equipment. Those who don't have it will later have to explain to
parents why they don't. He said giving technology to some teachers is like
trying to teach a fish about fire.
He says basic education in this county has jumped to a higher level.
He said, "Kids who come out of school need to function on a 12th grade level
and shouldn't be let out (of school) until they do." I agree, but I don't
know how it could be accomplished. It is distressing to have students in
10th and 12th grade English classes who can barely read well enough to
function. The importance of education is going to have to be instilled in
children who are very young, in order to keep them in school and learning.
One quote that is attributed to Dr. Hughes is, "Everything from the neck
down is minimum wage."
