I listened to the phone conference with Bob Hughes via Streaming Audio
and was thoroughly impressed and in agreement with what he had to say in
reference to education and technology. Even though I realize that
public education has changed, Mr. Hughes very eloquently put this
realization into perspective. He stated that children today are coming
to school less prepared. What exactly accounts for this? Is it our
educational standards or the parent's fault or what? This is a question
that requires much research and thought. Do children watch too much
television and possibly not read enough or utilize their creative
abilities enough?
Whatever the reason, Mr. Hughes obviously realizes that children are not
seemingly getting what they need in order to succeed today or in the new
millenium. He appears to be a very compassionate, committed, and
dedicated person who values a sound, quality education for our
children. What if we had a Bob Hughes on every school district's school
board? That would be phenomenal! He has enough insight and knowledge
to get his point across, and he appears to have charisma. Not only is
Mr. Hughes an asset to his school district, but he would also be an
asset on a technology planning team. He is an advocate of educational
technology which I agree is crucial to a child's educational
experience. This is not to say that the basics should be left out.
Children need a basic education which can be incorporated through the
use of technology integration. Take for example "The North Star Guide
to Technology Planning". With a guide such as this used with an already
existing plan, the child has no choice except to benefit from the
experience.
Thank you Dr. Anderson for providing us with this very meaningful and
powerful telephone conference with Bob Hughes and for providing the
audio file which I was fortunate enough to listen to.
