Subject: Leroy Finkel
Hi All!
I knew something was up last night when Dr. A offered and automatic A in
the course to anyone who could get E-mail from Mr. Finkel. Well, if it did
one thing, it made me curious as to who this Finkel "was" because I knew
he must have passed from this life, else why would our Most Excellent
Mentor put forth such a lofty request?
I admit that I, out of habit, "fingered" Leroy Finkel in my telnet session
last night. Because ya never know what ya might find out there.
What I *did* find today is that there is a Leroy Finkel Scholarship
offered through the Computing Using Educators Organization (see
www.cue.org). Other organizations may offer this scholarship. I haven't
read extensively enough to find out for sure.
For more information about this scholarship use AltaVista search engine.
Ask Who is Leroy Finkel. I cannot access the URL from the CUE site, it
defaults every time to the organizations index page.
Below is an excerpt from the page I found via Alta Vista:
History of the Scholarship
In 1978 LeRoy Finkel joined Bobby Goodson, Sandy
Wagner, Don McKell and a group of dedicated
teachers to form Computer-Using Educators. Over the
years LeRoy's contributions to CUE and to the teaching
profession qualified him for many honors including
CUE's first Platinum Disk.
In the words of one of his closest friends, "LeRoy has
meant so much to each of us in our quest to integrate
computers into the lives of educators and children. He
led the effort in it's inception, cajoled and nudged all of
us as the movement grew, and he acted as our constant
coach and mentor. He always maintained an informed
perspective which he shared with us in support as well
as constructive criticism. His books led the movement;
his columns heralded news of new products, bad
directions, and great gossip. There wasn't much that
missed his scrutiny in educational computing and his
advice was sought from far and wide."
LeRoy Finkel was the CUE NewsLetter. He edited it,
coaxed its authors to excellence and insisted that its
pages stay focused on classroom technology, teaching
and learning. Although his passing silences a major
voice, the chorus of voices he encouraged lives on.
The mission of the LeRoy Finkel Scholarship is to
develop new leaders in the field of educational
technology, individuals who will lead by encouraging the
growth of a new chorus of strong voices, unafraid to be
"feisty, irascible, and opinionated" as LeRoy would have
wanted.
