I was surprised to read the headlines in a front page article in my hometown
newspaper, "Grants Enhance Technology in Seymour Schools". It seems that my
hometown school system received a $45,000 grant from the Telecommunication
Infrastructure Fund. The fund is described as a state agency in Austin. The
agency has awarded a total of $202 million dollars to 1018 school districts and
charter schools, all 57 Texas community colleges, 69 public and private
universities, 592 public libraries, 300 public and not-for-profit health care
facilities, 11 model projects, and 13 collaborative rural school districts. The
fund receives approximately $150 million per year in revenues from
telecommunications assessments.
