Subject: planning committee for Austin Catholic school

Hello, Dr. Anderson,

Holy Family Catholic School is a prek-8 school that has just broken ground
on the edge of the Austin, Texas metropolitan area. We will open in the
fall of 2000. Returning to the role of principal after 5 years away, I
have been climbing the steep learning curve to arrive at a good
understanding of how technology can enrich our new program and how the
principal's role in guiding the process.

I have been studying your 1996 Guidebook publication as well as the TCET
Guide for Texas Public Schools from 1998. Today, I am writing to ask
advice regarding a specific planning problem.

Surely all would agree that the best planning committee, while involving
all stakeholders, would have the school faculty at the core. However,
since I have no faculty yet, critical decisions must be made by a
committee "lopsided" on the parent side, so that construction of the
infrastructure can proceed apace.

Probably 80% of the families who are applying to our school have one or
more parents working in the high-tech industries (Dell, IBM, Motorola,
Trilogy, Tivoli and so on, plus other start-ups and self-employed
entities). What a rich base of resources! But I am grappling with this
policy issue: should we have a policy statement regarding membership on
the committee when one works for a company that could potentially benefit
financially from purchasing decisions that are made?

I look forward to learning your insights on this issue, and thank you
sincerely for your assistance.

(Mrs.) Falba F. Turner
