tkt8763-01: Class Notes 29 September 1999

Hi all,

Back online and ready to translate the best way I know how.

1. Opinions regarding "What is the mark of a good technology plan?"
Comments from the class--

a.Concise: Not necessarily short but complete and to the point.
b.Plan should show how to enhance student learning.
c.A well planned budget is an indication of success of the plan.
d.Ongoing evaluation with a set time limit. Upgrade and adapt the plan as
new technology and ideas come to the forefront.
e.Evaluation is important. If you do not evaluate you will not know the
success of the plan.
f.Inventory of what you have and what you want/need. This will ensure
compatibility. Plans which do not have user/teacher input will not succeed.
g.Dr. A-Inventory is important. Do not just count boxes. This may not solve
a compatibility problem. It may actually hinder the technology infusion and
use into the classroom. Also important is teacher involvement in the
purchasing of the technology. The administration needs to know what the
instructors want.

We need to be empowered to be an advisory board to our school of thought.
We are the students and the institution is why we are here.

Effective Leadership: Effective leaders need to know how to teach. Some of
the most effective leaders spend much of their time teaching. Managers must
know how to spread their knowledge to their subordinates.

Dr. A. Relate commented that when reading or listening to a review, think
of developing a technology plan and bringing together a team to develop the
plan. It is tough to bring together all these individuals that need to be
part of the plan into the plan.

Mission
Our mission is to help K-12 classroom teachers and administrators share
effective methods for enhancing student learning through the use of new
classroom technologies.
Who We Are
We are the largest teacher-based, nonprofit organization in the field of
educational technology. ISTE members truly are redefining the boundaries of
the K-12 classroom. They form an ever-expanding network of dedicated
professionals sharing classroom-proven solutions to the challenge of
incorporating computers, the Internet, and other new technologies into
their schools.

Do You Know Where you Technology Plan Is Now? by Dr. Larry Anderson was
handed out in class. Could not find a link so here is a brief:

What should every technology coordinator know about technology planning?
1. Give Us Time-Understand that technology infusion takes time.
2. Listen-Listen to your people around you.
3. Renew the Curriculum-Do not just regurgitate a standard plan-adopt it to
your situation.
4. Be a Model-Have strong demonstrative leadership from the top levels of
school administration.
5. Support-Support the technology plan. Try innovative techniques and then
share these techniques with others.

I believe these may be the five characteristics of a good technology plan.

The article was published in Curriculum/Technology Quarterly which is at
http://www.ascd.org/pubs/ctq/curtech.html They have allot of great articles
but I could not find Dr. Anderson's article.

The Acorn Principle: Your greatest, your fastest, your easiest growth with
come from your natural abilities.
See http://www.cathcart.com/index.html for his site. It has a video clip.
His books on the Acorn Principle are at
http://www.cathcart.com/prodhumdev.html
Finally some summaries are at:
http://www.cathcart.com/acorn_principle_toc.html and
http://www.cathcart.com/apthoughtbreaks.html and
http://www.cathcart.com/topicgrow.html
Also he has an empowerment checklist at
http://www.cathcart.com/artempower.html

Some sketchy notes follow; however, I would go to his website and look and
enjoy.

How would the person I like to be do the things that I'm about to do? This
is a slogan that you may want adopt in life.

The Real Purpose of Business-The Acorn Principle. Most people believe the
purpose of business is to make money; however, the purpose of business is
to make life better. The product/service you sell should make other
people's life better. If it does not in every category, the business has
room to grow.

Journal Notes:

Listen to audio call on Class Web Page-

Bob Hughes(one of the speakers)-Some good quotes. Everything from the neck
down is minimum wage. Talking to a teacher about technology is like talking
to a fish about fire.

Dr A handed out an pamphlet from the Council of Chief State School Officers
regarding Improving Student Performance Through Learning Technologies. The
pamphlet is on the web at http://www.ccsso.org/techpol.html
