Hello fellow Sippers...
I enjoyed the experience of Seminar in Planning last summer.
I have been "lurking" and reading the email concerning donated computers. I would like you to consider one point that I don't think has been made. That is one of community partnership and public image between the community and the school district.
I recently was given 10 old computers, ranging from 286 to 486. And on previous occasions our district has been given many other "older" computers.
I feel beggars should not be choosey .. however we are not beggars. We currently have close to 900 computers most of which are multimedia with Internet access.
As technology coordinator I must maintain these systems and actually receiving older machines adds to my work load with very little return. We usually take time to go get the donated computers, write a thank you letter, evaluate the donation and then salvage what parts we can use. On several occasions I have gone and gotten the older computers (said thankyou) and returned to the school district simply to dispose of them in our dumpster.
The point I am trying to make is the individual or local business that makes a donation is at least thinking about our school. Their heart is in the right place and they feel that they are helping. I want to encourage community members to continue to "help" any way they can. By making the contact and accepting the donation the benefit is a closer bond between that individual and the school. It gives us a chance to say thank you and be appreciative. This type of good will may be more valuable in the long run and may lead to other positives.
It is easier to say thank you and then ask for more than say no, and explain why.
Enjoy the time, opportunity and conversation you have with Dr. Anderson.
