Dear Katrina:
Hi ... I am Leanne Freeman and I am a graduate student at Mississippi State
University and want to give you some suggestions in reference to your recent
email concerning integration of computers in primary classrooms. I am a
secondary teacher but have conversed with many elementary teachers and they
seem to use the concept of "centers". These "centers" are used in primary
classrooms and each teacher uses them a different way. For example: You
can divide your classroom into groups (number of groups doesn't matter ...
that depends on how many "centers" you are going to have), then have each
group visit a different center each day, as shown in the following diagram.
(please remember ... this is only an example, you can use any subjects or
topics you want)
R H M C S
M 1 5 4 3 2 R=READING
H=HISTORY
T 2 1 5 4 3 M=MATH
C=COMPUTER
W 3 2 1 5 4 S=SCIENCE
T 4 3 2 1 5
F 5 4 3 2 1
As you can see in this diagram, Group #1 goes to a different center each day
of the week so they get equal time at each center as does the other groups.
After many conversations I have had with elementary teachers, I feel that
using the centers everyday is beneficial for the students because you can
use remedial and enrichment projects in these centers that pertain to your
weekly topics or lessons. This way, every student has equal access to the
computer. You can have them be creative or do projects or whatever you can
think of ... and you only have to change projects every week which will also
be beneficial to you!!
I hope this can help you in your prac experience. Good Luck!!
Sincerely,
Leanne Freeman
