Financial Support for Graduate Education
Nearly all graduate students in SMET programs receive
some form of financial support for their graduate degrees. In nearly all
cases, however, applications for financial aid or scholarships must
be made at least one year in advance. Categories of financial support
include the following:
- Teaching and Research Assistantships:
These are direct institutional support generally covering tuition
payments and providing amodest stipend. In return the TA or RA is required
to provide assistance in the instructional or research activities of the
institution. Several institutions offer supportin the form of Service Assistantships
also.
- Institutional Fellowships & Awards:
These are usually available in the form of endowments from
business, alumni and others; in manycases, minorities and under-represented
groups are especially encouraged to apply.
- Fellowships & Awards from outside bodies (Agencies &
Foundations):
Several general and minority graduate fellowships & awards
exist from Private Institutions/Foundations (GEM , the National Consortium
for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc., Patricia
Roberts Harris, etc.) and from Government Agencies (NASA, National Laboratories,
NSF, DOE, DOD, etc.). Details can be obtained from the Graduate School
or directly from the agencies.
