The Bengali calendar was officially delineated by the Mughal emperor Akbar over fourteen centuries ago. The calendar is a solar one which is composed of six seasons that revolve around the region's agricultural cycle. The first month of the year is Boishakh. In the olden days, the coming of Boishakh was usually announced by the coming of a fierce storm, characterized by heavy rains and thunder, known was "Kal-Boishakhi".
Boishakh and Joishtho, the first two months of the year, comprise the season of "grishsho" which is roughly equaivalent to summer. This is the time of rice and jute cultivation.
Ashar and Shrabon form the rainy season - the time of the Monsoons - of Borsha. At this time, parched lands are inundated with almost incessant rain, poets take to writing sentimental poetry, and crops are harvested.
The early autumn season of Sharat comes in Bhadro and Ashshin. Sharat is characterized by the ending of the Monsoons, clearing skies and the collecting and processing of jute by the farmers.
Late autumn is the season of Hemonto, during the months of Kartik and Ogrohayon. The days become much cooler, and old fields are cleared to make way for the winter crops such as lentils and many vegetables.
Sheet is the Bengali winter in the months of Poush and Magh. Temperatures tend to be the coldest of the year. Fresh vegetables are abundant, and crops planted the following season continued to be cultivated or harvested.
Spring is known as Boshonto, in the months of Falgoon and Choitro. The last of the winter crops are harvested, and the Krisnachura tree blossoms with colour.
