Oktibbeha County Humane Society Cares for Neglected Animals

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Oktibbeha County Humane Society, Inc. (OCHS) would like to remind community members of the importance of properly caring for animals year-round, but especially in the hot summer months.
As temperatures rise, it is essential that pets are provided with adequate shelter to escape the heat and, as always, have access to food and clean water at all times. And never, ever leave your animal in a parked car.
Last week, OCHS received eight pit bulls suffering from extreme malnourishment and neglect. They are currently being cared for at the Starkville Animal Shelter.
OCHS Board Member Donna Reese stated, “We are fortunate that these dogs were found before more of them died. They are being treated and will hopefully make a full recovery.”
“We appreciate the donations and concern the community has shown for these animals,” added Reese.
If you would like to make a donation to OCHS, please stop by the Starkville Animal Shelter at 510 Industrial Park Road during its operating hours of 10AM – 5 PM Monday through Friday, and 10 AM – 2PM Saturday or mail to PO Box 297, Starkville, MS 39760. All donations are tax-deductible. In addition to monetary gifts, items most needed at this time include Pedigree dog food, Nine Lives cat food, kitten food of any brand, bleach, and towels for dogs’ kennels.
Volunteers are also needed to assist the shelter with caring for the cats and dogs awaiting adoption and for special events. For more information about volunteering, please e-mail ochsvolunteer@bellsouth.net.
To report an animal in a potentially dangerous situation, please call Starkville Animal Control at (662) 323-4134, or if you live outside of city limits in Oktibbeha County, call the County Sheriff’s office at (662) 323-2421.
Founded on the belief that the community has the responsibility to treat animals humanely, OCHS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a member agency of the United Way of North Central Mississippi. The mission of OCHS is to promote domestic animal welfare and the organization seeks to fulfill this mission by providing humane education; promoting animal welfare legislation; advocating and facilitating pet sterilization; and rescuing, sheltering, and promoting adoption of abandoned animals.
