Founding of Tri Delta

Delta Delta Delta had it’s beginning at Boston University. It was the vision of Sarah Ida Shaw, which she shared with her friends Eleanor Dorcas Pond, Florence Isabella Stewart, and Isabelle Morgan Breed (all pictured below). At the time of its founding in 1888, four other women’s fraternities existed at Boston U. Sarah wished to “…found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl’s inner self character than of her personal appearance…”

Sarah and Eleanor worked diligently to write rituals, draft a constitution, and design emblems. The young girls drew from their interests in Egyptian lore, Hindu mysticism, Greek myths, astronomy, and Christianity

Alpha chapter soon initiated 18 members into its charter chapter, and Delta Delta Delta was founded on November 27, 1888. Founder’s Day is celebrated internationally by Tri Delta’s annually on Thanksgiving Eve.
