The Apparel, Textiles, & Merchandising program is designed to provide students with an understanding of the apparel and textile industries, consumer behavior, product knowledge, and business principles. Students concentrate in one of two areas: Merchandising or Apparel Production and Design. Merchandising combines an overview of the apparel and textiles industry, consumer behavior, and product knowledge with an understanding of business principles. Apparel Production and Design emphasizes the design and production process from inception to finished product and its ultimate sale to the consumer.

The program includes a wide range of courses that prepare the student to understand all phases of apparel and textiles/products businesses, industries and services:

  • merchandise planning and promotion, sales projections and retail mathematics
  • visual merchandising and computerized store layout and display
  • entrepreneurship (home-based or micro business)
  • textile science, including testing of fibers and fabrics, fabric structure and finishes, quality control and serviceability testing
  • computer-aided design (CAD) for textiles and apparel design, illustration, pattern making, pattern grading, marker making and costing
  • apparel design and product analysis
  • historic costume, with hands-on experience in the Historic Costume and Textiles Collection
  • fashion theory, forecasting and trend analysis
  • guest lecturers from the apparel and textiles business and industry
  • regional, domestic and international field trips/study tours to New York, Dallas, Atlanta, Europe and other apparel, textiles and merchandising centers
  • Internships with major department and specialty stores, and other sites individually selected according to students' interests
  • minors in General Business Administration, Art, and other related minors available
  • ITAA student chapter that sponsors workshops, field trips, guest speakers and apparel/textiles related activities
