The Child Development and Family Studies Center is an experiential child study laboratory sponsored by the School of Human Sciences at Mississippi State University for students majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. Lab students and interns complete required weekly experiences at the Center under the supervision of university staff and faculty. Students have over 100 hours of supervised laboratory experiences and may complete 480 hours in an internship on site. The Center also works cooperatively with students and faculty from other departments and colleges on campus.
The philosophy of the Child Development and Family Studies Center is based on several beliefs about young children that are rooted in theory and accepted professional practice. We believe it is important to provide an environment that practices respect, consistency and balance when meeting a child's developmental needs. Each child is unique and special. We support every child developing a positive self image and learning positive ways to interact with and appreciate the distinctive qualities of their peers and others. The development of each child's physical, social, emotional, creative and cognitive self is optimally supported when center activities and experiences are "hands on" and appropriate and teachers are nurturing, sensitive, and encourage curiosity. We value an inclusive environment that offers each child an opportunity to make decisions and experience the consequences of those decisions. We believe that a child thrives when parents and teachers are partners committed to working cooperatively to enhance the child's development.
The Center is housed in a 9,000 sq. ft. building that serves children ages six weeks to five years. The center is located on College View Drive near Humphrey Coliseum. Developmentally appropriate classrooms and equipment, multipurpose room, and two outdoor playgrounds are part of the Center.
Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Center follows the twelve-month university calendar and is closed on all university holidays.
A daily schedule of activities appropriate for each age group is planned and followed. Younger children enjoy a choice of activities and equipment as well as the outdoor playground. Older children have planned activities that focus on integrated themes. Older children also learn from campus visitors and field trips. Daily learning plans and schedules are posted at each center.
A waiting list for each age group is maintained. A balance of ages, sexes and cultural diversity is valued and vacancies are filled accordingly. Children of MSU faculty, staff and students have priority when vacancies are filled.
