Admission
to Human Sciences Teacher Education Program, Mississippi State University
Students
interested in becoming a high school Family and Consumer Sciences teacher complete
requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Human Sciences degree (Human Sciences
Education option) in the School of Human Sciences, Mississippi State University.
Persons meeting general admission requirements for the University should designate
the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as the college, Human Sciences
as the major, and Human Development and Family Studies as the concentration
for assignment of a Human Sciences Education advisor.
Once the specified
45 semester hours of the general education core are completed (by end of sophomore
year), Human Sciences Education students must also apply for admission to the
Teacher Education program in the College
of Education at Mississippi State University. The same information applies
to transfer students. The following admission requirements must be met at the
time of application to the Teacher Education program:
- ACT composite
score of 21 with no subscores below 18 or an SAT score of 860 prior
to admission to college.
Applicants not meeting these requirements or who do not have an ACT score
must complete the following:
- Take and
pass the Praxis I PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test) with three subtests
in reading, writing, and mathematics upon completion of the first 45 hours
of the general education core. Registration and information are available
on-line at the Praxis
website. Tests are offered at pre-set times during the year. Allow approximately
6 weeks to receive scores.
OR
- Take and pass
the electronic version called the CBT (Computer-Based Academic Skills Assessment
Test) with three subtests in reading, writing, and mathematics upon completion
of the first 45 hours of the general education core. Each of the three subtests
can be taken at convenient times on the MSU campus and at many community
and junior colleges in the state. The fee for three tests at MSU is currently
$70 for each test or $110 for all three if paid at one time. Instant scoring
feedback is available for the reading and mathematics subtests. The writing
subtest is manually scored and takes 4-6 weeks to receive a score. Call

- A cumulative
2.5 GPA (out of 4.0) at Mississippi State University and a 2.5 GPA
in the prescribed 45-hour general education core.
- Present the
following completed forms available from the College of Education:
- Two letters
of recommendation forms
- Verification
of Work Experience with Children and/or Youth form (40 hour minimum of
work experience).
- General Education
Core Curriculum Evaluation form
- Admission
to Teacher Education (Phase II) form
Upon successful
completion of the above requirements and submission of forms to the College
of Education, the student will be eligible to take upper division professional
teacher education courses.
