Air Force ROTC instructor tops in nation

Maj. William L. Coode, assistant professor of aerospace studies at Mississippi State, was recently named the Outstanding Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Instructor of the Year.

Coode was selected the top instructor out of the nearly 400 Air Force ROTC instructors nationwide.

The award is presented by the American Defense Preparedness Center.

Before coming to Mississippi State in 1992, Coode served as an air weapons controller at Ft. Lee Air Station, Va. Following his stint at Ft. Lee, Coode was assigned to Mangil San Air Base, Republic of Korea, for a one-year tour.

After his assignment in Korea, Coode earned a position as an assistant professor of history at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. In his final year at the academy, he was recognized as the "Outstanding Military Educator" in his department.

In 1988, Coode moved to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, where he supervised a 35-member joint U.S.-Canadian crew which monitored Soviet intrusion into American airspace.

He returned to Korea in 1991 for a second one-year tour, before being assigned to Mississippi State as an Air Force ROTC instructor.

He serves as faculty adviser to the university's Angel Flight chapter.
