Healing Hands: An Alabama Medical Mosaic

J. Mack Lofton Jr.
University of Alabama Press
281 pp., ISBN 0-8173-0779-6

Following on the success of his first published book, J. Mack Lofton ('51) of Mountain Brook, Ala., has woven another intriguing history--this time of the medical profession in Alabama from the early years of this century to the present.

Healing Hands: An Alabama Medical Mosaic is a collection of the personal experiences of more than 70 doctors, nurses, midwives, and other medical practitioners, many of whom actually made house calls--and often on horseback.

Lofton, who retired about 12 years ago after a 30-year career as a sales executive with Sears Roebuck, also is the author of Voices from Alabama: A Twentieth-Century Mosaic [see Alumnus, Winter 1994]. Following retirement, he embarked on his new profession, first writing for regional magazines and then tackling book-length fiction and nonfiction.

In his second published book, he chronicles the often humorous, often sad, and always caring experiences of the Camellia State's medical community.

Lofton currently is working on a book about the personal experiences of law enforcement personnel in Alabama.
