Robert M. "Bob" Hartley

former sports information director and assistant athletic director


Robert M. "Bob" Hartley ('42) of Starkville, former sports information director and assistant athletic director for media relations at Mississippi State, died Aug. 27, 1997. He was 77.

A Meridian native, he retired in 1985 after serving the Athletic Department for 39 years. Since his retirement, he was a consultant to MSU Director of Athletics Larry Templeton. In all, he was associated with the university for 51 years.

Templeton said of Hartley, "He was Mr. Mississippi State Bulldog and without a doubt the greatest ambassador this university has ever had or ever will have."

During Hartley's tenure at Mississippi State, he worked with 52 coaches and six presidents.

Hartley was a member of the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame, and the College Sports Information Directors of America.

He was a World War II veteran and a member of the VFW, the university's Bulldog Club, the Starkville Quarterback Club, and numerous other organizations. [See story.]
