
Marion T. "Red" Loftin of Starkville, retired vice president of graduate studies and research and professor emeritus of sociology at Mississippi State, died July 14, 1997. He was 81.
Loftin received a bachelor's degree from Northwestern Louisiana State University, a master's from Louisiana State University, and a doctorate in sociology from Vanderbilt University.
He came to Mississippi State in 1965, was named vice president of graduate studies and research in 1979, and retired in 1985.
Loftin was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a past president of the university's Association of Retired Faculty and of the Starkville-MSU Symphony Association.
Mississippi State has received $125,000 from the proceeds of a life insurance policy that Loftin gave to the university. The contribution will fund the Marion T. Loftin Graduate Assistantships in the Social Science Research Center on campus. The university also is the beneficiary of Loftin's estate.
