Named in honor of the university's former longtime sports information director and Athletic Department consultant, the Bob Hartley Memorial Fellowship was created to give internship opportunities for young media relations practitioners.

Hartley spent more than half a century promoting Mississippi State athletics. He was named the school's first sports information director in August 1946 and initially retired as assistant athletic director for communications in June 1985. He died last year.
